All Electric Automobiles Are Not Created Equal

The all electric automobile may be the mode of transportation of the future. But current prices and lack of range are keeping the viability of the all electric automobile low. But as fuel prices rise, and demand stays high, due to emerging automobile markets in China and India, it is unlikely that gas prices will drastically fall soon. That makes the future of the all electric automobile much brighter.

This article will discuss the pros and cons of an all electric automobile, the theory behind the propulsion systems of all electric vehicles, alternatives to the all electric automobile, and the environmental issues that may arise from both

First, let us discuss the pros of an all electric automobile. Obviously, one pro is no gasoline to purchase. You will cut your automobile fuel cost completely off. Imagine driving by every gas station and never having to stop at one ever again. Your all electric automobile will allow you to do this.

Then, there are the environmental pros to owning an all electric automobile. When you are zooming around in your all electric automobile, no emissions are being produced. That's right, driving around in your all electric automobile is as environmentally safe as walking.

But owning an all electric automobiles has its cons too. First, the power used to charge the batteries that power the electric drive motors does not come from thin air. All electric automobiles will have to be plugged-in, eventually, to recharge its battery. That means your electric bill will increase, which will offset the money saved from not having to buy gasoline.

Not only will plugging in the all electric automobile increase your monthly power bill, but plugging it in will also affect the environment. The power that comes to your house comes from somewhere. That somewhere is usually a large power plant.

Depending on where you are in the country, that power plant can put out large quantities of harmful emissions. If you're in the Northeast, you are more likely to be running off of nuclear or coal power; in the Southeast you are likely running coal, hydro-electric, or nuclear; and if you are in the West you are likely running nuclear, gas, or coal. So your all electric automobile is not necessarily COMPLETELY environment friendly.

The last con to be mentioned is the battery pack in the all electric automobile. The very nature or batteries mean that at sometime, the battery will no longer hold a charge. If the all electric automobile has not become prevalent, the cost of replacing the battery will likely be high. Not only that, but if the batteries are not recyclable/reusable, what kind of pollution will they produce? But all electric vehicles are still looking like completely viable options for a mode of transportation in the future.
